Why masks? 😷

Right now, our country’s medical professionals are facing the fight of their lives to protect us from COVID-19, without adequate supplies and protection for themselves. N95 medical-grade masks are in short supply around the world, as the demand for them is suddenly at an unprecedented high; this type of mask is effective in blocking the COVID-19 virus, and provides essential basic protection for medical staff.

However, as well as being in short supply at the moment, N95 masks don’t typically last very long because they must be thrown away once they get soiled, and under ordinary circumstances would be replaced daily. In the face of this current crisis, many doctors and nurses are having to care for potentially infectious patients without masks, putting themselves in direct danger as they care for the sick.

When we heard about the shortage of medical masks in our hospitals we felt called to figure out a way to help. So, we dreamed up a special way VDDCo and all our sweet Kindreds can join forces to make a difference—from the safety of our own homes.

What we’ll be doing here at VDDCo

We’ve decided to put normal production of our dresses on hold for now, so that we can focus on getting as many N95 masks as we can into the hands of those who so desperately need them, as well as prolonging the life of the N95s/KN95s with the help of washable cloth masks.

Ordinary cloth masks (the type people are sewing themselves) do NOT protect from COVID-19. We can sew these masks ourselves with a pocket for an extra filtration layer, but it’s important to know that these are not sufficient to protect from the virus.

The benefit of cloth masks is that they can (and should) be washed. So, the main purpose of this type of cloth mask is to provide an extra outside, washable layer to go over the top of N95/KN95s masks, making these more effective for longer.

Our goal is to sew as many cloth masks to cover and extend the life of the N95s as possible, plus raise money to buy more N95/KN95 masks to donate to local hospitals and people on the front line who need them.

How you can help

We know everyone’s circumstances are different, so we wanted to come up with as many different ways as possible to get involved and support our heroic medical professionals at this critical time.

We’re starting mask production ourselves, and we know MANY of our kindreds are sewers too, so we want to involve us all as a community to create this needed extra layer of protection (literally & figuratively) to go along with our N95/KN95s mask fundraising efforts.

We’re creating at-home mask-making kits, and are looking for volunteer home sewists to join our production efforts! We can order wholesale supplies, bundle what is needed, provide instructions and a pattern for masks we’ve researched to be the best for the current needs. The mailing label for where to send your finished masks will also be included. We don’t want people having to go to stores unnecessarily for supplies or wading through the available information! So this way you can be a part of the efforts while still being at home. We’ll supply all materials and coordinate final delivery.

We’re seeking donations to cover the cost of these supplies, and volunteers to help sew!

If you can donate to cover the supplies, that would be a big help, and you can choose your amount HERE. This funding will allow us to send a kit to a volunteer home sewer or to our production team, who are now volunteering their time to creating masks. These donations also include funding for N95s/KN95s as well! We are gathering supplies to make at least 2,000-3,000 fabric masks, and will continue to source more as long as we have donations.

If you can join our beautiful army of home sewers, sign up HERE, and as donations come in for supplies, we will send you a package with all supplies needed for 20-25 masks. We will also include a mailing label for where to send it, and we will try to match you with a local physician's office or hospital in your state so you can be directly supporting your community! If you have any risk or possibility of being sick, please do not volunteer. These masks will be laundered when received by the offices to sterilize, but we still do not want to risk any contamination.

Here are all the different ways to get involved:

  • If you’re a home sewer: Volunteer as our home production team to make masks from home! Sign up HERE. We will send you a kit with fabric, instructions, and all supplies. We’ll also include a small VDDCo gift card as our thanks. ♡ We want to make it easy to be involved without anyone needing to go to the store.
  • If you can’t sew: Donate to fund a mask kit. All proceeds will go to both purchasing and donating respirator masks and sending supplies to home sewers or our production team to create cloth masks.
  • If you’d like to buy a beautiful new dress: Pre-order a dress from our new early release, and/or purchase any dress or gift card from our normal collection, and the same funding will go to sourcing masks, and the fabric mask kits! Our entire site is now a fundraiser for this effort.
  • If you’d like to buy a gift for a friend: If you want to purchase these as a gift for a loved one to help them feel less alone during this time of social-distancing, we can send them directly to another address for you. (We just request one address per order to help keep shipping straight!)
  • If you’d like to buy your own cloth mask: We will next be creating our own masks for purchase. It’s important to remember that these will not protect against COVID-19 on their own, but provide at least one layer of protection, and are likely more effective than a scarf. Sign up HERE to be notified once they're in stock!

We’re passionate about supporting each of you in whatever way we can, and we also believe in empowering and mobilizing this wonderful, caring community to take positive action in a difficult time. Together, we can be a part of the solution to the shortages of crucial supplies that our medical professionals are now facing.

There’s a limit to what we can control; but we believe that even small efforts from a band of compassionate and proactive Kindreds can make a difference, and even potentially save lives.

The fundraiser starts today and you can share the posts on Facebook or Instagram, here. And, please help share the word—even if you’re not able to help with this project yourself right now, simply sharing this message is more helpful than you might realize.

Let’s focus on putting love into action this season, and show our care most to those who are bravely giving their all to protect us.

Stay safe & stay positive, dear ones!
